Musings by Muses

Our City through Their Lens

Our muses are the people who make Vienna feel more alive and remind us why it’s worth falling in love with this city - or falling in love with it all over again for those of us who might be in the ‘take it for granted’ phase we are all guilty of slipping in and out of.

They are the observers, the connectors, the tastemakers, the ones who always seem to notice the thing you almost missed. They are the ones we text for recommendations, the ones who always know what’s happening, and the ones who bring the romance back to everyday places, events and experiences.

They will be offering their ‘musings’ of Vienna that are always sharp, personal, witty and attentive. They’ll also be curating experiences for you, shaped by the way they see and experience Vienna. Please give them a warm welcome - soon you’ll be seeing Vienna a little more through their eyes.

Viktoria Schödl: Culinary & Wine

Viktoria grew up between vineyards, garden soil, and family dinners that continued late into the night. After returning from New York, she took over her family vineyard together with her brothers in Loidesthal in the Weinviertel and helped transform Schödl into one of the coolest wine producers in the country, all with her trademark nonchalant ease.

Viktoria Schödl

When she is not hopping between Taiwan, Hong Kong, New York, and whichever city claims her wines next, she spends her time at work in Weinviertel.

She is plugged into everything happening in food and wine here and keeps us updated on every culinary event worth showing up for. And somehow she does all of this while being effortlessly cool, funny, and impossible not to love.

Julia Skergeth: Fashion & Design

Julia has one of the sharpest eyes for aesthetics and style and turns everyday moments into moodboards.

Julia Skergeth

She’s a curator of beautiful things and creative people, and that instinct runs straight through SKERGETH, her handbag brand known for clean structures and exceptional construction.

She is fiercely determined and somehow takes on a level of work that would flatten most people, yet she consistently delivers at an absurdly high standard. Watching her work makes you admire her, fear her a little and wonder how she manages to make all of it look so easy.

Julia Harrauer: Exhibitions, Art and making us laugh

Julia is in our eyes one of the most talented emerging curators in Vienna - whose exhibitions over the past six years have become the ones we rush to see, including her recent standout show in Athens that we still talk about. She brings brilliance to everything she touches, shaped by long-term work in the field.

Julia Harrauer

This year alone she’s curating more than 15 shows and if that wasn’t keeping her busy enough she also took on operational management at this year’s edition of Vienna Contemporary. Still not enough? She also co-founded and runs Young Curators Club Vienna, which supports up-and-coming curators and gives the city’s next voices a place to grow. An absolute vibe right? We told you so.

On top of that she is one of the funniest people we know - her humour is bone dry, her comedic timing impeccable and she leaves us with tears in our eyes from laughing so hard regularly. She’ll be the one to keep us updated on every exhibition opening and art event worth going to week after week.

Dominykas Cinauskas: Modern Flâneur

Originally from Lithuania, Dominykas is an artist with a gift for uncovering the soul of a city. He knows Vienna’s history, its forgotten architects, and the hidden details inside churches, benches, and backroom bars.

Dominykas Cinauskas

His taste is incredible, his music recommendations are always the coolest, and his knowledge of art, books, and film runs deep. Time with him turns even a short walk into something unexpected and inspiring, leaving you with a fresh sense of wonder about places you have walked past a hundred times and at least three new obsessions.

With his instinct for revealing what others overlook, Dominykas will contribute an eye that turns the familiar into something new, sharing the book, film, and article recommendations that shape his thinking, guiding us to both hidden corners and new spots across the city.

Gabriela García Vargas: Film and Cinema

Gaby was born in Cuba and has lived in Vienna since she was young, which gives her this perfect mix of Cuban spirit and Viennese attitude. She is an actress with range - trained at the Film Academy Vienna, and most recently starred as a detective in the Bozen crime series.

Gabriela García Vargas

She has a huge heart and is genuinely one of the warmest people we know, the kind who makes any room she’s in feel lighter. And as a testament to her brilliance, and to that of her husband Philipp Mair-Vargas (who you’ll hear about soon), their daughter is so incredibly cool that the rest of us are left wondering whether we have ever been cool at all, even for a minute.

Gaby will be giving us insights into the film world in Vienna covering events, premieres as well as other unique insights.

Philipp Mair-Vargas: Film & Culture Connector

Philipp is the kind of person who, if you spot him upon walking into a room, somehow you’ll meet five new people before you’ve even taken off your coat.

Philipp Mair-Vargas

Based in Vienna, he moves between film sets, happenings and DJ nights. He runs Pont Pictures, produces with a particular talent for a good story arc, and DJs with the same particular talent for a good track arc. Together it makes him unusually good at connecting ideas, people and opportunities. Rumour has it he has a major project in the works, but we’ll let him be the one to drop that news.

He’ll be giving us insights into what’s happening across Vienna’s film, music and cultural scenes, plus the kind of behind-the-curtain context only someone this plugged in can offer.

Sophie Atterfee: Photography, Art and Cultural Observations

Sophie is sharp, witty, and ambitious with a fresh perspective shaped by growing up at Attersee and making Vienna her own.

Sophie Atterfee

She manages Preiss Fine Art and pours the same curiosity into her side ventures, including Crawling Home, a roaming gallery now in Salzburg. Lately she has also been plotting culinary projects in the Alps, with an unexpected twist (we wouldn’t expect anything else from Sophie).

She has that insider-outsider radar that lets her catch the city’s oddities and beauty in equal measure, which makes her take on Vienna entertaining and completely on point. And always at her side is Frieda, her playful young dog who is equal parts the people’s princess and equal parts chaos, making every adventure with Sophie even more fun.

Orion: All Things Barking

Orion is our resident four-legged social theorist, specialising in street snacks, sofa diplomacy and enthusiastically greeting anyone who looks like they need it.

Orion

He has an excellent read on character, an even better read on who is likely to share food, and brings a level of joy to the group that cannot be replicated by any human. He’ll be offering his own canine-approved observations of Vienna, reminding us that sometimes the best way to understand a city is simply to walk it - preferably with him leading the way.

About the Editor

Ruby Arabella Wallen tracks the city’s pulse, observes its culture and characters, and works with a small circle of her personal muses to create you a weekly Sunday Dispatch - your blueprint to the week ahead in Vienna.
