Music of the week

Tunes to feed your soul 🎵

This week’s tune to feed the soul is I:Cube’s Adore - first released in 1999 on Versatile Records, then brought into the world of Hôtel Costes the same year through Stéphane Pompougnac’s Vol. 2: La Suite. The Paris hotel wasn’t just a place to stay, but a world of curated sound, scent, and mood; through these compilations, it changed the hotel industry by proving that music could define a brand as powerfully as design or service.

Performance Art: Im Styx baden by Matteo Haitzmann

World premiere of Im Styx baden by friend of Heimat - Matteo Haitzmann - performed in English, this 60–70 minute solo work is inspired by the mythological River Styx. Followed by an artist talk. (Note: uses strobe lights, haze, and loud sound.)

Culinary

Culinary Highlight: Addiert x Schoedl Family

Vienna’s Addiert hosts a three-night collaboration from October 23 to 25, bringing together chef Jaeho Jung, guest chefs Yunkyung Cho and Yongwoo Shin, and the Schoedl siblings whose natural wines carry the texture of Austria’s soil and seasons.

The restaurant’s concept sits at the intersection of Korean fermentation and philosophy and Austrian craftsmanship and local produce. Fermented sauces like doenjang and gochujang meet ingredients from nearby farms - trout, root vegetables, mountain herbs - while every course reflects both restraint and curiosity. A single oak table stretches toward the open kitchen, softly lit and pared back to essentials. The arrangement asks you to slow down, to watch, and to taste with consciousness.

Menu: 5-course lunch €145 · 10-course dinner €295 (with wine pairing)

When: Thursday October 23rd to Friday October 25th, Addiert Franz-Josefs-Kai 43, 1010, Vienna, Austria

Musings & Maker Highlights

Drink Crush: SUPER CATTIVO – Rosso

Handcrafted in Burgenland, Austria, SUPER CATTIVO Rosso blends sun-ripened citrus, alpine herbs, and Austrian wine grapes into a bold, naturally bitter aperitivo. Crowned “World’s Best Aperitif” at the 2024 World Liqueur Awards, it delivers depth, balance, and a touch of rebellion in every sip. Their 500ml bottle is €25.

How to prepare:

  • Sipper: pure over ice with an orange twist

  • Kipper: 1 part SUPER CATTIVO, 2 parts tonic, splash of lemon or lime

Store Crush: Studio.14

Located at Neuer Markt 14 in Vienna’s 1st district, Studio.14 is a distinguished luxury eyewear boutique known for its curated selection of high-end and avant-garde frames and sleek, art-gallery interior. They specialize in designer labels - our all time favorite is Jacques Marie Mage. See here.

Culinary Crush: Birbs Bagels

A new arrival at Naschmarkt, Birbs Bagels brings an LA sensibility to Vienna mornings. Their sourdough bagels strike the perfect balance - chewy, light, and slightly tangy - paired perfectly with one of their several matcha latte options - such as White Peach Matcha Latte. It’s the perfect Saturday morning spot - start here before wandering across the road to the farmers’ market - caffeine in hand, bagel in tow and an empty tote ready to be filled with Salzgurken, Lion’s Mane mushrooms, or whatever new discovery you make this week. See here.

Sweat Crush: Alchemy 37

Check out this new spot in the 9th district offering Hot Pilates - and when we say hot, we mean real heat. This isn’t your cozy stretch class, it’s a full-body firestarter that'll leave you dripping, glowing, and possibly rethinking all your life choices (in the best way).

💡 Pro tip: Hit their super earlybird class and you’ll float through the rest of your day like a legend.

Notes

"Suderei” of the week

Each week we give our resident Viennese, Eleonore Marie Stifter the platform complain about something she has no business complaining about, just like a true Viennese.

Maroni season started, but somehow your gloves only protect from the cold and not the hot Maroni? Well, we won‘t be able to help with that as well, but we can recommend visiting one of Viennas oldest Glove Stores, Handschuhe Stiassny, open since 1854. No link, because they have no website - you’ll need to see for yourself. Schottengasse 2, 1010 Wien

Table Diaries

HEIMAT Stammtisch 📝

Each Friday, HEIMAT sets up shop at Café Sperl for our weekly Stammtisch - a standing table for ideas, opinions, and the occasional spirited debate. This week, the conversation circled around awareness and flow - that fine line between being fully present and completely lost in what you’re doing. Are we meant to notice more, as The Art of Noticing suggests, or to disappear into the moment entirely? And what sits in between - that hazy middle ground of autopilot - where we’re neither truly aware nor truly absorbed?

That thought stayed with us, so we’re carrying it into this week’s reflections.

Book We’re Reading: The Art of Noticing by Rob Walker invites us to slow down and rediscover curiosity in the everyday. In one exercise, he suggests simply to “look up - and then look further up.” There’s looking up - the quick glance that catches a café sign, a balcony railing, or a glimpse of a chandelier through a tall window. And then there’s looking further up - the kind that makes you pause, tilt your head back, and see the city beyond its usual frame.
Question: The next time you pause and look up, what will Vienna show you that it’s been hiding in plain sight?

Article We Loved: A Brief History of Consciousness traces how we’ve tried to understand awareness - from ancient debates about the soul to today’s dialogue between neuroscience and philosophy. It’s a reminder that being conscious isn’t just about thinking, but about noticing we’re alive.
Question: Think about that moment when you’re completely absorbed in something - and then suddenly snap back, realizing how far you’d drifted into it. For an instant, you witness consciousness return; the observer steps back in. That shift, from being to noticing being, might be the clearest glimpse of what it means to be alive. The more self-aware we are, the less immersed we feel - and the more immersed we are, the less we notice ourselves. When was the last time you felt completely absent from your own awareness, and could you let a bit more of that in this week?

Got a minute? Fill out this feedback form to help us shape the future of HEIMAT.

See you next week,

H
