Music of the week

Playlist to fall in love with 🎵

Is there a playlist you’ve been returning to for more than a decade? This is ours. First recommended to us during travels in Spain by a German acquaintance, it introduced us to Falscher Hase - a DJ who defies the usual spotlight. Rather than flaunting production credits, label affiliations, or mainstream DJ status, Falscher Hase presents themselves as a music lover, selector, and storyteller. Their sets prioritize the music and the listener over ego, creating an experience that’s intimate, thoughtful, and timeless.

Lisette Model – Retrospective

Consider this your sign to swap Thursday drinks (or simply continue your day drinking) and add a little culture: On the 30th of October, the Albertina is shining a light on one of the most iconic female photographers of the early 20th century. Born into a Viennese Jewish family in 1901, her sharp eye, love for high contrast, and emotional intensity made her an institution in New York and beyond. She’s proof that Vienna has always produced icons.

The exhibition also features her draft of the 1979 monograph - a true piece of photo history - shown publicly for the very first time. Expect grain, glamour, and maybe a few existential stares; Lisette knew how to frame it all. We can’t wait to see it - and cheers to strong women behind the lens and timeless contrasts.

When: From October 30th at Albertina, Albertinapl. at, 1010, Vienna, Austria

Things to do on Halloween

Spooky Season

If you can't stand trick-or-treating, why not treat yourself to a cinema visit on Halloween? Here are some of the screenings we recommend you put on your radar for the spooky season.

A Clockwork Orange

One of the greatest classics. "Clockwork Orange," directed by Stanley Kubrick and based on Anthony Burgess’s novel, is a provocative exploration of free will, violence, and societal control. Following Alex, a charismatic yet ruthless delinquent, the film challenges viewers with its unsettling mix of dark humor, striking visuals, and a haunting classical soundtrack, asking profound questions about morality, choice, and the nature of humanity.

When: Friday, October 31st at Filmcasino, Margaretenstaße 78, 1050, Vienna, Austria

Jenniffers Body

"Jennifer’s Body," directed by Karyn Kusama, is a darkly comic horror that blends teen drama with supernatural terror. When high schooler Jennifer becomes possessed by a demon, she embarks on a murderous spree, forcing her best friend to confront loyalty, revenge, and the dark side of adolescence.

When: Friday, October 31st at Burgring Kino, Opernring 19, 1010, Vienna, Austria

Halloween III: Season of the witch

A terrified toy salesman is mysteriously attacked, and at the hospital, babbles and clutches the year's most popular Halloween costume, an eerie pumpkin mask. Suddenly, Doctor Daniel Challis finds himself thrust into a terrifying nightmare.

When: Friday, October 31st at Burgkino, Opernring 19, 1010, Vienna, Austria

Musings and Makers Highlight

Good Tramezzini

Something Vienna was really missing so far? Good Tramezzini. The kind you only get in Venice, more filling than bread. Thank god Lido is opening on the 29th of Oktober, and is finally giving us a solution for this problem. Their teasers look delicious, they serve Prosecco on tap and hopefully the vibes with it.

Lido Bar, opening at Landskrongasse 8, 1010 Vienna.

Drink Crush: Urgestein Cuvée from Schnabel–Ermihof

A blend of Zweigelt, Blaufränkisch, and Pinot Noir from the steep Sausal vineyards of Hochegg, Koregg, and Kreuzegg. Unfiltered and unapologetically alive, it’s all dark fruit, cool earth, and quiet intensity. While the label looks a little haunted, the taste is a little too smooth making it the ideal bottle for Halloween or any night your ready to toast to the other side.

Café Kandl Sessions No.7: Lucky Shong x Schnabel–Ermihof

As Oscar Wilde said - everything in moderation, including moderation. So why turn down a good excuse for a little day drinking on what is looking to be a crisp Thursday afternoon? If you have a boss, we recommend the excuse: “My neighbor’s cat got stuck in the stairwell and I’m… involved.” Schnabel–Ermihof’s wild, no-additive wines are pouring, with Lucas “Lucky” Shong, Rotweinguide’s 2025 Sommelier Rookie of the Year, leading the way. Call it a tasting, call it therapy; either way, your Thursday just got a little more interesting.

When: Thursday, October 30, 13:00 - 16:00, Café Kandl, Kandlgasse 12/2, 1070, Vienna

Store Crush: Sissy Sound

A temple for vinyl lovers and analog romantics. Sissy Sound curates albums, books, and all things hi-fi with an owner who’s heard everything (at least) twice. It’s the kind of place you enter for a “quick browse” and end up deep in a conversation about sound quality, life, and which Bowie era truly mattered. You’ll leave lighter in the wallet, heavier in vinyl.

Where: Margaretenstrasse 47/1/II, 1040 Vienna, Austria

Sweat Crush: BÅL Studios

Not Pilates, not yoga - definitely painful (the good kind). Lagree on the Megacore Reformer hits muscles you didn’t know existed, with slow, controlled movements. It’s high-intensity, low-impact, and scientifically proven to make stairs your mortal enemy the next day. Sometimes slower is better. Depends who you ask.

Where: Schmidgasse 2/top 1a, 1080, Vienna, Austria

Notes

Thoughts of the week

Book we’re reading: Empire of AI by Karen Hao. Through over 300 interviews and insider accounts, Karen Hao exposes the power struggles, ethical dilemmas, and global implications of AI development. From labor exploitation in Kenya to environmental degradation in Chile, the book paints a stark picture of the human and ecological costs of AI advancement. As AI companies amass unprecedented power, Hao challenges us to reconsider the true price of progress.

Interviews we’re watching: The Algebra of Happiness with Scott Galloway. Galloway draws on his experience as a professor at NYU Stern School of Business and as an entrepreneur to ask the fundamental question: “What’s the formula for a life well lived?” He argues that success and meaning aren’t about following your passion blindly, but about making trade-offs, managing priorities, and recognizing what really matters. The conversation touches on the importance of relationships, of financial stability over chasing glamor, and of self-awareness rather than image.
